How Frontage Length Affects Scaffolding Price
Scaffold frontage cost explained: how frontage length scaffold price is calculated, what a bay is, and why perimeter matters more than frontage on a wrap.
Scaffold frontage cost is the simplest variable in a quote to understand and the easiest to get wrong. Frontage length sets the width of the scaffold, and combined with height it sets the area you pay for.
The mistake most people make is quoting their frontage when the job actually needs their perimeter.
Frontage length scaffold price in practice
Frontage is the horizontal run of the elevation being scaffolded, measured along the wall, plus a small allowance at each end so the scaffold extends slightly past the corner.

Bays, and why the number matters
Scaffolders build in bays, the horizontal spacing between standards, usually 1.8 to 2.4 metres. A 9 metre frontage is four or five bays depending on the spacing chosen.
Bay length is not arbitrary. It is set by the load the boards have to carry:

A quote listing bays and lifts is describing the grid. Four bays by three lifts is a standard two storey semi elevation.
This matters practically: if your job involves loading materials onto the scaffold, it needs a shorter bay and therefore more standards for the same frontage. Tell the scaffolder what will be stored on it.
Frontage against perimeter
On a single elevation, frontage is what you need. On a wrap, it is not.
A detached house with a 9 metre frontage and 9 metre depth has a 36 metre perimeter. Quoting the 9 metre frontage understates the job by a factor of four.

The rate falls as frontage grows
A longer elevation costs less per square metre, because transport, survey and mobilisation are fixed costs spread over more scaffold.

This is why a narrow terraced frontage costs less in total but more per square metre than a wide detached elevation.
Measuring it yourself
Use a tape or a laser measure along the wall at ground level. Three practical points:
- Measure the wall, not the roof. Eaves overhang can add half a metre either side.
- Add the returns. A scaffold has to extend roughly 300mm past each corner to be tied and braced properly.
- Include projections. Bays, porches and chimney breasts that project from the wall face add area and sometimes need their own treatment.
A measurement accurate to half a metre is fine for an estimate. The scaffolder will confirm on survey.
What frontage does not tell you
Frontage sets area, but it does not capture:
- Ground conditions along that run, which may change from driveway to lawn
- Obstructions such as a conservatory, oil tank or manhole
- Access for delivering material along the elevation
- Boundary proximity at either end

Three common frontage mistakes
Quoting the room dimensions. Internal room widths are not the external wall run. Measure outside.
Forgetting the return. A scaffold extends roughly 300 mm past each corner so it can be braced and tied. On a narrow terrace that is a meaningful proportion of the frontage.
Measuring only the front when the job needs the rear. The single most expensive misunderstanding. A re-roof needs both slopes, which means two elevations, not one.

Say what work is happening and which elevations it touches, not just the width of the house.
