Tube and fitting scaffold cost in 2026 runs from about £650 for a single elevation to £3,500 for a full wrap, which is to say it sets the baseline price for almost all UK domestic scaffolding. All figures exclude VAT.
Tube and fitting is the traditional system: steel tubes joined with couplers, cut and configured on site. It is what most people picture when they think of scaffolding, and it is still the default on domestic work.

These are the same figures used across our property guides, because tube and fitting is the assumed system in domestic pricing. Where a quote says “independent scaffold” or “traditional scaffold” without qualification, this is what it means.
Why it remains the default
Any geometry is possible. Tubes are cut to length and couplers fix at any point along them, so awkward elevations, bays, conservatories and irregular ground are all handled without special components.
Component cost is low. Tube and coupler stock is cheaper to buy and hire than proprietary system components.
Every scaffolder has it. No compatibility issues, no waiting for specific system parts.
It suits small jobs. On a single domestic elevation there is nothing repetitive enough for a system to pay off.
Where it costs you
Erection is slower. Every joint is a coupler tightened by hand. On a large repetitive facade this is materially slower than a system scaffold, and labour is the dominant cost on any scaffold.
It needs more skill. Configuration is decided on site rather than by the system geometry, which puts more weight on the competence of the erecting team. That is one reason CISRS cards matter, as set out in Checking a Scaffolder Insurance and Accreditation.
Consistency varies. Two crews can build the same scaffold differently. System scaffold enforces its own geometry.

What drives your quote
Because tube and fitting is priced by face area rather than by component count, the variables are the familiar ones: elevations, frontage length, height and lifts, hire duration, region and access.
One tube and fitting specific point: irregular elevations cost less to scaffold in tube than in system, because the system would need bespoke infill. If your property has bays, projections, a conservatory or changing ground levels, tube is very likely the right answer and you should expect it in the quote.
TG20:21 and compliance
Most standard domestic tube and fitting scaffolds are built to a TG20:21 compliance sheet, which is the industry design guidance for common configurations. Where a scaffold falls outside those standard cases, it needs a bespoke design from a qualified engineer, typically £150 to £400.
Ask which applies to your job. A scaffolder who can produce a TG20 compliance sheet for a standard house scaffold is demonstrating competence, and one who cannot explain the question on a complex elevation is worth a second look.

A quote listing lifts and bays is describing the grid: a bay is the horizontal spacing between standards, usually 1.8 to 2.4 metres, and a lift is the vertical spacing, usually 2 metres.
What affects your price
The variables a scaffolder actually prices from, in order of impact:
- Number of elevations. The largest single lever on any quote.
- Frontage length and height. Together these set your face area in square metres.
- Number of lifts. Each 2 metre lift adds boards, ties and labour. Above 9 metres the rate rises again.
- Hire duration. Four to six weeks is normally included, then 5 to 10% of the quote per extra week.
- Access difficulty. Narrow passages, soft ground, long carries and obstructions all add labour hours.
- Region. Up to 40% between the cheapest and dearest parts of the UK.
- Extras. Permits, netting, bridging, chimney lifts and temporary roofs.
