Solar is a short job behind an expensive access requirement. A 4kWp system takes one to two days on the roof, but the scaffold still has to go up, stand, and come down.

A typical UK 4kWp installation lands between £6,000 and £8,500 fully fitted in 2026, and industry sources put logistics, meaning scaffolding and administration, at around 25% of the total. Roof access is the single largest swing factor: the difference between a bungalow and a three storey townhouse is a four figure sum on an otherwise identical system.

Why solar needs a scaffold at all

Some homeowners ask whether roof anchors and harnesses would do. For a commercial installer working to current standards, generally not:

  • panels are large, heavy and awkward, and need two people at the eaves
  • rails and mounting feet are fixed along the full width of the array
  • cabling runs from the array to the eaves and into the loft
  • the installer needs a working platform at eaves level for the whole day

An edge protection scaffold at eaves level along the array width is the normal minimum. Full elevation scaffold is used where the array is large or the roof is steep.

Keep the hire period as short as possible

This is where solar customers overpay. The install is one to two days. The scaffold quote often assumes four to six weeks.

Ask for a short hire. Two weeks is usually plenty and many scaffolders will price it, particularly if you book the strike date at the same time as the erect.

Coordinate the dates properly

Solar installs slip. Panels arrive late, DNO approval takes longer than expected, weather intervenes. Every slipped week is a week of standing scaffold.

Three practical steps:

  1. Confirm the install date is firm before booking the scaffold, not provisional.
  2. Ask the installer who books the scaffold. Many include it, and their trade rate may beat yours. Check what hire period they have assumed.
  3. Book the strike at the same time as the erect, so the scaffold leaves the day after the install rather than a fortnight later.

Battery, EV charger and roof repairs

If any roof repair is needed before the panels go on, do it in the same scaffold period. Slipped tiles, a failing verge or worn flashing are all far cheaper to fix while access exists.

Retrofit solar on an ageing roof is worth thinking about carefully. Panels last 25 years and a roof under them may not. If the roof needs replacing within ten years, doing both together saves an entire second access cost, which on a two storey house is £650 to £1,900. Edge protection against full scaffold

Solar is one of the few jobs where a reduced scaffold specification is genuinely common, and knowing the difference is worth a few hundred pounds.

Edge protection is adequate for a straightforward array on an accessible pitched roof. A full elevation scaffold becomes necessary where the panels are being carried up rather than craned, where the roof is steep, or where the installer also needs access at first floor level for cable runs.

Ask the installer which specification their method statement requires. Paying for a full elevation when edge protection was specified is a common and avoidable overspend.

What affects your price

The variables a scaffolder actually prices from, in order of impact:

  1. Number of elevations. The largest single lever on any quote.
  2. Frontage length and height. Together these set your face area in square metres.
  3. Number of lifts. Each 2 metre lift adds boards, ties and labour. Above 9 metres the rate rises again.
  4. Hire duration. Four to six weeks is normally included, then 5 to 10% of the quote per extra week.
  5. Access difficulty. Narrow passages, soft ground, long carries and obstructions all add labour hours.
  6. Region. Up to 40% between the cheapest and dearest parts of the UK.
  7. Extras. Permits, netting, bridging, chimney lifts and temporary roofs.
