Repointing is slow work. That is the whole story on cost: the scaffold is standard, but it stands for a long time, and hire is what you end up paying for.

Trade sources price an independent tied scaffold for repointing on a two to three storey property at £550 to £1,150 per week of standing time, which is consistent with the job totals above once a normal hire is applied.
Programme length is the real cost
A skilled bricklayer rakes out and repoints roughly 8 to 15 square metres a day depending on mortar hardness, joint width and weather. A two storey elevation of 50 square metres is therefore four to six days of work, and a full semi wrap is three to five weeks.

Lime mortar is the outlier. It cannot be worked in frost, needs protection while curing, and is slower to apply. On a listed or period property the scaffold can stand three or four months.
Netting is usually required
Raking out mortar produces a great deal of dust and debris. Where the elevation faces a pavement, a road or a neighbouring garden, sheeting or netting is normally a condition of the permit or simply a practical necessity.

Sheeting also holds moisture against fresh lime work, which is sometimes desirable and sometimes not. Ask the bricklayer before the scaffolder specifies it.
Working platform detail matters
Repointing is one of the jobs where scaffold detail directly affects the quality of the finished work.
Lift spacing. The bricklayer needs to reach roughly 1.2 metres above the platform comfortably. Lifts spaced at 2 metres mean part of every band is worked at full stretch. Ask for tighter lift spacing on a full repoint.
Board to wall gap. Close enough to work the joint, far enough to see the face. Around 200mm is usual.
Board condition. Mortar droppings on split boards are a slip hazard and the inspection will pick it up.
Phasing a repoint
Repointing is well suited to phasing because each elevation is independent and the work is rarely urgent across the whole building. Doing the weather facing elevation now and the rest in two years is common and sensible.
The economics are the same as any phased job: each visit carries £200 to £400 of mobilisation plus a minimum hire. Phasing pays when the phases are more than a couple of months apart, which for repointing they usually are.
Bundle with roofline and render

Mortar type changes the programme
The mortar you are pointing with has a direct effect on how long the scaffold stands, and therefore on cost.

A lime repoint on a period property can take twice as long as the cement equivalent and can only be started in certain months. Budget the hire accordingly rather than assuming a standard six week period will cover it.
What affects your price
The variables a scaffolder actually prices from, in order of impact:
- Number of elevations. The largest single lever on any quote.
- Frontage length and height. Together these set your face area in square metres.
- Number of lifts. Each 2 metre lift adds boards, ties and labour. Above 9 metres the rate rises again.
- Hire duration. Four to six weeks is normally included, then 5 to 10% of the quote per extra week.
- Access difficulty. Narrow passages, soft ground, long carries and obstructions all add labour hours.
- Region. Up to 40% between the cheapest and dearest parts of the UK.
- Extras. Permits, netting, bridging, chimney lifts and temporary roofs.
